Glenrothes, 1994 Vintage (Scotland)
The most recent Vintage to be released by The Glenrothes dates from 1994, and, according to a Glenrothes spokesman, “For the 1994 Vintage, Malt Master John Ramsay was tasked to create the most stimulating and uplifting expression of The Glenrothes. Through meticulous cask selection and the experience of a lifetime in whisky, John has succeeded in combining the trademark flavour profile of The Glenrothes – the emphasis on citrus, spice and vanilla – with the added twist of lemon zestiness on the finish.” A soft yet citric nose, with vanilla fudge. Fresh and approachable, with more citric notes, especially lemon. The finish is medium to long, fruity and gingery. A lithe, clean-limbed Glenrothes. Yet again, this malt surprises with its infinite variety. 43.0% ABV, 70cl, £37.00, specialist whisky merchants.

Arthur Motley

Nose
Orange: pith and rind. Lemon Jif and geraniums.
Palate
Dark chocolate, baked apples, hazelnuts and something sweet yet savoury like black bean sauce.
Finish
Dry roasted peanuts.
Comment
A full-on, after dinner style and a bold, characterful spirit.

Dave Broom

Nose
Fleshily ripe. Dried pear, clotted cream with scented estery notes. With water there’s wholemeal bread, a touch of orange. Quite zippy.
Palate
A slightly strange mix of stewed fruit and dry malt tussling together. Hint of sulphur. Seems young suggesting greater things to come.
Finish
Long rich, lightly spiced slightly citric.
Comment
A teasing mix of aromas and flavours.

Whisky Magazine Tasting Notes

Nose: Spice, spirit and citrus. Fruitiness too, with a combination of pale sultanas and sharp woodland berries.
Palate: Slightly spirity, spicy and with mixed peel character.
Finish: Biscuity.
Overall: Youthful, but without the lip-smacking class of the older vintages.

Martine Nouet

Whisky authority Martine Nouet has identified The Glenrothes 1994 Vintage as being bright gold in colour with hazelnut hues. The nose is of fruit gums, fresh apple and a touch of gorse. It has the richness of lemon shortbread and custard tart. On the palate the youthful vigour comes to the fore; the 1994 Vintage is tangy and lively with hints of plum jam, macadamia nuts and pepper dust. Overall, it is a stimulating dram with lots of depth – distinctively punchy on the palate and distinctly different.

dist Oct 94, bott 11 Apr 06 db [Anmerkung: jetzt fängt Jim auch noch an] (89) n20 heavy, ponderous and mildly off-key fruit lightened wtith by a dash of honey and a topping of butterscotch; quite spicy; t23 fantastically busy arrival with a good smattering of spices to lift the big malt and liquorice middle; gentle Java tones arrive with the vanilla; f23 no little latte coffee as the differing oak tones merge b23 nose apart, a seriously good choice of cask with no stining on the complexity. 43%

Royal Mile Whiskies

A bottling with casks from different years, inspired by the famous non-vitange offerings from champagne. Keir found the following: "Werther’s originals. Soot. Rum and raisin. Some solventy notes contributing to good complexity. Soft. Creamy, lots of vanilla. Very pleasant!’
