Glenrothes 1987/2002 (43%, OB)
Colour: yellow gold. Nose: lots of fresh apple and cider. Again
not too complex, the younger one still was fresher and livelier.
This one really needs some time to open up. Develops on some
oaky notes, getting a little sour (yoghurt). Mouth: more
balanced, and somewhat bolder than the one we just had. Good
news! Oakier and drier too Cooked fruits (apple again), caramel,
honey, chocolate, and lots of pepper. Gets woodier and woodier,
but in a rather nice way. Having said that, it's not very
complex. Rather long, somewhat drying finish, on pepper and
cocoa powder. 82 points. (November 13, 2004)

Nose
Sweetshops. Icing sugar. Liquorice. Very delicate hint of rooty
peatiness
Palate
Silky-smooth. Nougat. Dried apricots. Anis.
Finish
A suggestion of orange. Teasing delicate, gently soothing.
Comment
The flavour metaphors evoke childhood, but this is a very adult,
sophisticated malt
|
Jim Murray |
Nose
Charming acacia honey and demerara sugar within a floral theme
of pansies and violets.
Palate
Initially enclosed and oaky. Pans out to allow a richer,
toffee-cream and intensely malty middle.
Finish
Medium length, simple mixture of oak and barley.
Comment
A well-sculpted malt with a restrained richness and limited
complexity. Lovely weight throughout.

The Glenrothes (1987,
43%)
Amber gold color. Rich aromas of complex fruit and vanilla.
Thick and rich in body, with a mouth-coating texture. Flavors of
honeyed malt, well structured fruit, and vanilla, with a long
finish.
Style: Speyside single malt scotch. Limited
distribution nationwide (imported by Skyy Spirits,
212/213-9777).
Here's one of the best-kept secrets in Speyside.
It is the third vintage released here in the U.S., the others
being from 1979 and 1982. The 1979 vintage expressed more sherry
influence than the 1982, and so does the current 1987 vintage.
The extra touch of sherry influence contributes a richness and
fruity complexity that makes this whisky a pure joy to drink.

Glenrothes 1987/2000 (43%, OB) - 78 points
Nose: Softly sherried, fruity and a little nutty. Faint
spices and maybe even some smoke. A lot fruitier with time.
Something coastal and 'fishy' too..
Taste: Smooth. Not as sweet as you'd expect at first.
Malty and ever so slightly dry. Alcoholic. Very bitter in the
finish - menthol? Not very complex.

Puderzucker, aber ultimative geschmeidige Trockenheit.
