Wrecked by sulphur. In Whisky terms, tragic. 57% |
Malt Advocate |
A single cask
bottling of The Glenrothes aged in a first fill sherry cask.
Only 519 bottles, all destined for the US. It is the richest,
chewiest, sweetest, and fruitiest of all the Glenrothes whiskies
reviewed here. Deep mahogany color, with notes of toffee apples,
waxed fruit, burnt orange, prunes in syrup, and dark chocolate.
The intensity of the sherry and length of oak aging gives the
whisky a flavourprofile that begins to transcend traditionial
whisky flavours, expressing notes of port wine, pot still rum,
and rancio.$995! |

Awesome; t24 massive spice and hickory start, sweetened
with mollased and honeycomb; f23 long with the spices
remaining playfull and the vanilla intervention soft and
empathic; b24 thats what you call a sherry cask; big, yet
everthing just-so. Classic.57,5% (<-wrong Vol) |

Glenrothes 1979/2005 (55.3%, OB, cask #13470, 583 bottles)
***** I remember another 1979/2005 bottled at 55.2% (cask #3808)
that was quite excellent (WF 89). Colour: mahogany. Nose: well,
it's obviously an heavily sherried version and maybe I shouldn't
have started with this baby, as it's also the strongest But a
verticale is a verticale, isn't it! Anyway, bags of chocolate
and prunes, Armagnac, deep oloroso, morello cherries, raspberry
jam and blood oranges, so it's a fruity/sweet sherry it seems.
Quite heavy so far With water: quite superb, classic
development on balsamico, leather and walnut liqueur, with also
touches of bacon. Mouth (neat): ultra-rich, thick, concentrated
sherry. Walnuts, dried figs, prunes, quince jelly and again that
feeling of old Armagnac, but there's also something citrusy that
really lifts the whole and makes it fresh and (almost) sippable
just like that. With water: the oak's spices come out (ginger,
cinnamon) but the citrusy notes remain and keep it lively.
Finish: long, on gin fizz and ginger liqueur, then classic
prunes and figs. Comments: an ultra-sherried version that
reminds me of some of Glenfarclas Family Casks. After all, we
aren't very far geographically speaking
SGP:552 - 90 points.

Glenrothes, 1979 Single Cask (Scotland)
Occasionaly a cask of The Glenrothes will be deemed worthy of
bottling as a Single Cask. These are fairly few and far between.
This 1979 has oiled leather and wood polish on the nose, waxed
jackets and dried fruits. Much more gently fragrant when reduced.
Massive on the palate: old sherry, beeswax and dark treacle.
Very long in the finish, with dark chocolate notes. Insistently
drying and moreish. 55.3% ABV, 70cl, specialist whisky
merchants. |

Nose: Sherry,
and lots of it. Malt vinegar and flat coke. Molasses, prunes and
Camp coffee essence. Root beer, gingerbread, dark rum and
licquorice. We could go on and on...
Taste: Dark rum, treacle, banana cake, and woody
finish with spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves).
Overall: Yes this is a whisky matured in a sherry cask,
but at the same time it somehow hasn't become dominant or
over-tannic. A big scorer. |

Glenrothes
1979/2005 (55.2%, OB, cask #3808, 502 bottles) Bottled at
cask strength, which is rather unusual at Glenrothes' if I'm not
mistaken. Colour: pale amber. Nose: starts more spirity as
expected, with more varnish, even glue This one suffers from
the comparison with the 1970, for it's so rougher - even
slightly soapy. Yet, it gets then unusually perfumy (roses, musk,
scented soap, incense again), all that in an enjoyable way.
Something vegetal as well (asparagus). Hints of cardboard. The
whole is a bit strange, maybe it's the high proof. Let's try it
with a little water: it gets wilder now, more vegetal but also
more complex, maybe slightly peaty, waxy Phenolic, in any case.
Mouth (neat): better, much better than on the nose when
undiluted. Very assertive and unusually raw for a Glenrothes (in
a good way). Lots of roasted nuts, caramel, toffee, with
something very vegetal and nicely bitter (bay leaves, capers,
radish). Then we have the usual honey plus quite some mastic,
chlorophyll, infused tealeaves... A different Glenrothes, more a
hipflask version than a club version. I like it, it's got a
little more to tell you than the usual Glenrothes, no matter how
perfect their balance and roundness is. Finish: very long,
sweeter now, still very honeyed but with again a growing
grassiness and something phenolic if not peaty. I had it at
87-88 points but I must say its extra-dimension (phenols and
such) deserve a little more. Okay, it's going to be 89 points,
but this one needs time. (February 2, 2007) |

The Glenrothes
1979 Single Cask no. 3808 db (95)
n24 a near faultless nose with the clarity of the fruit,
presumably sherry (though maybe not first fill), is enough to
bring a tear to the eye: a sweet nougat kick is matched by rich,
spiced sultana, the well-aged bourbon: absolutely something for
everyone; t24 the malt dissolves on impact letting in
several shockwaves of spice; almost brutally fruit yet the
honeyed seem is a thick one; f24 long, the most playful
vanillas and with a confidence bordering on arrogance as the
spices re-ignite, as if telling you that it'll end when it feels
like it...not when it theoretically should...meanwhile, the very
lightly smoked honey and burned fudge just go on and on and
on... b24 la pearl of a malt that has me scratching my
head in wonder. Although from a single cask, there are elements
in this which are pure bourbon and others which are pure sherry
- in every sense. In the end, it doesn't much matter because the
tastebuds are almost too overwhelmed to take in all that is on
offer. Stunning 55,2% |

Nachklang: Die beim Geschmack
festgestellte Süße bleibt lang erhalten und wirkt sehr lange
nach. |

Eiche, etwas Vanille, süßlich fruchtig
